I crept down the edge of the long stone hall leading to one of the corner towers. Only this was one I had never been to before. It was closed off the day I went with my mum so many years ago. And now, even with the tower protected by some sort of magic, it seemed off limits. Maybe because it was the boy’s dormitories.
Devon gave me exact instructions. Meet him by the door, bring my trench coat, and be ready to make a mad dash.
I wasn’t leaning against the cold stone wall for even a minute before I heard the creak of the wooden door opening. He stepped out from the inside and peered down at me. He was somewhere between Lothar and Rodrick’s height. Enough to be taller than me but not so much that I was staring up at him. His eyes held an intensity that never seemed to let go. And his smile was flirtatious from beginning to end. I took my focus off his face before he made it over to me, trying to appear as though I wasn’t admiring him from afar. I couldn’t help it. There was something to his mischievous grin that told me he knew something that I didn’t. And he enjoyed my naivety a little too much.
“Are you ready?” he asked.
I gave a silent nod, feeling a little exposed. I don’t know why he had such an effect on me. It seemed as though every man in L.I.T. held more masculinity and an epic level of physical attractiveness that made my legs want to give way beneath me. And I didn’t like it. It made me vulnerable. I already endured my death once by being vulnerable to a man. I didn’t want the same thing to happen again.
“Good,” he said, lifting the hood of his black leather trench coat. “Follow me.”
I did the same, covering my head with my trench coat and walking down the hall.
He opened a door midway through the hall and waited for me to enter in front of him like he was leading me into a trap.
“This isn’t where I transformed with Lothar,” I said.
“Lothar wouldn’t approve of this. Nor would anyone else. We have to do this in secret.”
I took a deep breath and stepped into the darkness. I wondered for half a second if he would close the door behind me and lock me inside. But he didn’t. He followed me in and I watched in awe as my eyes slowly adjusted to the light. Or the lack thereof.
“How in the world?” I said with my mouth hanging open.
“You’re part beast now,” he beamed. “Your eyes will adjust to the darkness with even greater focus once you’ve finished the trials.”
Then he led the way once more to a large stone wall, pressing one of the stones inward. Just as the floor beneath me moved when Lothar first took me to Rodrick’s private study, stones a few feet away shifted and moved, revealing an underground hatch.
